Restore with your Apple Account
- Install from the App Store
Use the Apple Account you originally purchased with.
- Choose “Restore Purchase” on MN’s purchase screen
This restores your account’s purchases that apply to the device. No license code is needed.
Activate with email and license code
- Install the website’s DMG version
Open the disk image, move MarginNote 5 to Applications, then launch it.
- Activate Standard from the Mac menu bar
Choose “MarginNote 5 → Activate Standard”, then “Activate License” when prompted. Enter your purchase email and Standard license code.
- Purchased Premium too? Activate it next
After Standard is active, choose “Activate Premium” and use its separate license code. The education Standard license does not automatically include Premium.
MN4 to MN5 is a free upgrade; purchased entitlements remain. For earlier versions and cross-device access, see plans and upgrades.

- Follow the approval and purchase instructions
Install the direct DMG version. After purchase, use the license code sent by email to activate Standard.

Why can’t I find “Activate Standard”?
Check which version you installed. License-code activation is available in the direct DMG version. The App Store version uses “Restore Purchase”.
Where is my license code?
Check the email used for your purchase, including spam. If it is missing, contact service@marginnote.com with your purchase email and proof of order. Do not post your code publicly.
Can I move my education license to another Mac?
The current guide allows personal use on two Macs at once. Deactivate the license from the app menu on a Mac you no longer use, then activate the new one. Contact support if the old Mac is unavailable.
Does one purchase cover my other devices?
It depends on your plan. Data sync and paid access are separate. App Store cross-device plans and DMG Premium sharing each have conditions. Check the plans before purchasing again.
